We've heard it before -
Gabe doesn't like the
PS3 - heck, he didn't like the
X360 at first either - but in an interview with
Edge Blog - he takes another swing.
And this one is pretty damned succinct:
Edge: A while ago you said that you thought Sony should do a 'do-over' with PS3. Do you still think that?
GN: Absolutely. I think [PS3 is] a waste of everybody’s time. Investing in the Cell, investing in the SPE gives you no long-term benefits. There’s nothing there that you’re going to apply to anything else. You’re not going to gain anything except a hatred of the architecture they’ve created. I don’t think they’re going to make money off their box. I don’t think it’s a good solution.Ouch! When cornered about his initial position on the
X360 platform - in which he lambasted multicore support - he clarified his new position. Essentially, had multicore ended up being a solution only for the
360 - he wouldn't have acquiesced. However, considering where
Intel has gone with multicore - moving away from single-core production as the
'holy grail' - it makes development sense for
Valve to spend the time and energy on building tech for the platform.
The Takeaway: Gabe thinks Sony's proprietary platform architecture = teh suck for developers who have to spend an inordinate amount of time porting to the platform for an impaired player experience. Luckily for Gabe -
EA is throwing some of their own
PS3 code ninjas at the problem for The Orange Box release.
I wonder if others feel the same? If you're a developer, and have
PS3 experience - let us know your thoughts - even off the record
