Prisoners Duplicating Crimes Through Games
Note: This story originated in the United Kingdom, hence; the same rules don't necessarily apply. This is International news, and perhaps a good subject for discussion.
Playstation 2 systems have been supplied to jails all across the country, but that is nothing new. According to a Home Office spokesman this "has been proved to be a successful method of generating a positive response from prisoners." Successful or no, prisoners have been using some of the games to gloat to fellow inmates about the acts that landed them there in the first place.
There have been plenty of arguments about violent video games, but this brings about an entirely new topic: Should violent video games be available in prison? Should convicts be allowed to relive the violent crimes that they're being punished for, even on this level? Would it hinder the possibility of reform?
I'm a proponent for violent video games. I believe ours is a country of freedom of expression. I also believe media doesn't make people violent, perhaps violent people are attracted to violent media, but so are some of the most easygoing people I've ever met. On the other hand, why perpetuate any kind violence, simulated or no, in an institution where the purpose is to cleanse it?
