Microsoft Mucho Xbox360 Problems
Poor, poor Microsoft. Hackers are hard at work at tearing apart the Kiosk Demo mentioned in our Newswire a couple of days ago. It seems that hackers were able to rip the Hexic game from the Kiosk Demo, modify it, then play it back on the 360 allowing them to unlock achievements and get higher scores on the Xbox Live leaderboards. The King Kong demo was modified and simple Flash programs were able to run on the 360, as well.
Hackers weren't the only issues M$ had this weekend. It seems the Xbox Live leaderboards were reset this weekend. Microsoft claims that this was just a glitch and the leaderboards weren't reset because of or by the hackers. Many users of Xbox Live aren't too happy to see their high scores go away, though.
Gamasutra is also reporting that the video game rental company GameFly will be issuing a form letter to their customers who return discs damaged from their 360s:
"We have received reports that certain XBOX 360 consoles have caused damage to GameFly videogames. Unfortunately, we have been notified that you recently returned a damaged XBOX 360 game.
As a precaution, we have removed all XBOX 360 games from your GameQ. Please contact Microsoft at 1-800-4MY-XBOX. Please do not rent XBOX 360 games until you have resolved this issue.
In the future, should GameFly receive XBOX 360 games from you that have been damaged, you will be charged a replacement fee."
I guess the Xbox360 drive damaging games is more widespread than previously thought. I don't know of anyone who's had this happen to them, but GameFly's letter has got me concerned. 2006 hasn't started so hot for Microsoft. I myself can't wait to see how they handle these situations.
