Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles (REUC) is part two of a one-two punch coming to Nintendo's Wii platform later this year with part one coming in the form of Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition set for a June release. REUC is an all original title taking the player on an action/shooter rollercoaster ride through the events 'chronicled' in Resident Evil 0,1,2 and 3 - with a few surprises thrown in for good measure.
Playing in a first-person perspective (FPS) - albeit on rails - with your trusty Wii remote as your gun (ala Red Steel) players will "experience a more personal horror", promises Keiji Inafune, producer at Capcom Japan. "This game is all about shooting" he goes on "it feels good to blow things away!" And indeed it does Mr. Inafune.
Taking aim around the room we were able to shoot framed pictures off the wall – chip away at wooden doors and otherwise wreak havoc upon the interior design. Hope that wasn't a Ming vase!? "But destroying things around the room can create a disadvantageous situation", warns Keiji as I get a little trigger happy and shoot out the lights leaving me in complete darkness with about five hungry zombies – yikes!
Reloading is done with the flick of a wrist though you'll be zombie snack a number of times before this action is firmly ingrained in your brain. You employ many of the familiar weapons from the titles this entry is based upon including pistols, sub-machine guns, rocket launchers, knives, grenades and the list goes on.
The storyline, while familiar to fans of the series, will take players behind the fall of Umbrella Corporation (purveyors of the dreaded T-virus) through the eyes of two major characters (Jill & Chris) whose stories intertwine, though it's not yet been revealed if players will be able to swap characters on the fly or only at fixed moments within the story. While the story is all new many of your favorite moments will make a return to scare you from a fresh perspective, including the famous hell-hounds through the corridor window scene that made us all jump out of our seats so many years ago.
Considering the Wii's limited graphics capability, when compared to the X360 or PS3, REUC looks pretty tasty with a color palette and HUD design that work to give the game a high-quality graphic novel-like feel. The play is pretty intuitive and the HUD is simplified with no health meters to track, instead your peripheral vision will begin to fog with a crimson red as you take more damage.
Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles – even at this early stage in development (Keiji says it's about 30% along in the build we demoed) - does create a more "personal horror" experience. Despite being on rails - with its all new storyline taking us behind the scenes of our favorite evil corporation (No, not Halliburton – the other one) and multiple pathways allowing for high replayability we have no doubt we'll be ready to be scared out of our seats all over again.
