We here at Gamehelper haven't heard or seen much of the Hellboy videogame since, um, E3 2006. At the time they had nothin' more than some early CG video footage and even the Konami rep didn't know much more about it other than it was an original game and not based on any of the movie licenses. Well last night, at Konami's Gamers Day event, we not only got to see more of the game, but actually got some hands on action as well as talked to some of the crew that worked on the title.
Hellboy is shaping up to be a great looking beat 'em up that's coming to your PS3, PSP, and Xbox 360 consoles. At first glance it might seem like it's just your typical movie license brawler but after playing a couple of levels you'll realize it's much more than that. The more Hellboy fights the more powerful his Right Hand of Doom gets, which in turn causes more damage not only to his enemies, but to his surroundings as well. You might wanna wake that brain up 'cause Hellboy throws in some strategy elements, too. There'll be times when you'll be forced to make some choices, as do I need to take out the creatures on the roof or should I take out the leader and hope the rest of the gang will run for the hills. For those who don't like to do much thinkin' there's plenty of Nazi zombie head ripping action to keep ya satisfied.
Fans are probably wondering what version of Hellboy is this? They say it's not related to the movies, but the character designs sure look like the movie ones. Lemme see if I can straighten this out for ya. Apparently the story is based around the The Conqueror Worm comic book storyline, but they opted to make the characters resemble their movie counterparts. In fact they just signed Ron Perlman to reprise his role and do the voice of Hellboy. Both Mike Mignola (creator of Hellboy) and Guillermo Del Toro have been involved with the game, which might explain why the comic book and movie arcs have been blended for this video game adventure.
It's hard to imagine a beat 'em up fight fest without good ol' player two. Krome Studios will include a two-player co-op mode, where someone can join Hellboy's plight as either Liz Sherman or Abe Sapien. There is an unannounced, top-secret third character to be revealed later. My guess is that, based on the storyline, it'll probably be Lobster Johnson. Don't quote me on that, though.
Hellboy is scheduled to come out sometime in 2007.
