At a glance, Tenchu 3 seems to be nothing more than an updated version of the original, utilizing the power increase inherent to the PlayStation 2. Even at that, I was not thoroughly impressed by what I saw.

The Down and Dirty
Tenchu 3 marks the first actual sequel of the original Tenchu game, which was first introduced on the Playstation 1 quite a few years ago. As confusing as this sounds, Tenchu 2 was actually a prequel to the original Tenchu, and only now are we finally seeing the story progress forward.
The Goods
For the uninitiated, Tenchu is a game of stealth. In the original title, players were required to infiltrate or assassinate, avoiding any form of detection. The game takes place in fuedal Japan, when ninja's were a spot of the norm I suppose. Or was that the 1980's?

Your ninja has a few items at his disposal, helping in the "disposal" of enemies. Throwing stars, katanas, smoke bombs can be picked up from the fallen. However, this time around, the player is not required to use stealth. Because of this, you will be faced with different possible outcomes, depending upon your actions.
Just as in the first of the series, the grapple is probably the best item if stealth is your choice. Many-a surprise attacks can be executed from rooftops, and the grapple will get you there. A few of the old weapons have returned, along with a few new ones. The game will consist of somewhere in the neighborhood of 27 missions. There are 9 missions per character, which must mean there are 3 right? Right… but Activision has only mentioned the two so far… the same two characters as in the first game. The game will also feature a cooperative mode, but details of it are thin at the moment.
The Verdict
At a glance, Tenchu 3 seems to be nothing more than an updated version of the original, utilizing the power increase inherent to the PlayStation 2. Even at that, I was not thoroughly impressed by what I saw. While it is still early to pass final judgment on the game, I feel that the audience for this game will be the die-hards fans of the original. Visually I'm not sold, and unfortunately, that is what sells games. The game looked nice, but didn't display what I know the PS2 is capable of. We will have to check back in on this one as it nears completion.
